Results day can feel huge - whether you’re buzzing, gutted or somewhere in between - it is a big thing for you after years of your life spent in school. This tiny routine helps your nervous system settle so you can think clearly and actually make a plan (or go hug someone). Short, simple, and easy to remember. You've got this 💪🏼
How to do it — 6 minutes
-
60 sec — Ground (name 5)
-
Quietly name 3 things you can see, 1 thing you can hear, 1 thing you can feel (feet, clothes). Say them out loud or in your head. This pulls attention out of the story and into now.
-
-
90 sec — Calm breath (box-lite)
-
Breathe in 4, breathe out 6 (no hold). Repeat for 3 cycles. Keep your mouth closed if you can. Slow exhale tells your body it’s safe.
-
-
3 min — Paper dump (write it out)
-
Set a timer for 3 minutes. Write everything that’s looping in your head: thoughts, “what ifs,” plans, questions. Don’t fix it — offload it. When the timer ends, fold the paper and put it somewhere (or bin it). You’ve given your brain a place to store the loop, so it doesn’t have to replay it.
-
-
30 sec — Tiny action
-
Do one small physical thing that signals “done for now”: open a window, step outside, change your top, or stretch arms overhead and exhale. Say one sentence: “I’m stepping out of that loop.”
-
Why this works (short)
-
Grounding breaks rumination. Breath calms the nervous system. Writing captures the worry so your brain doesn’t keep looping it. The final action closes the ritual.
What to do next (simple options)
-
If you need answers (appeals, uni choices, next steps) write one clear next step — one line.
-
If you want company, text one trusted person: “Can I talk for 10?”
-
If you want space, schedule a 20-minute worry-check later today — a set time to re-open the list if you need to.
Pro tips
-
Use the same short routine every results day — cues help your brain learn to calm faster.
-
If you feel shaky, sit down and put a hand on your belly while breathing.
-
If you get good news, take one minute to notice it fully before doing anything else.
Heads-up / Help
If your feelings are overwhelming, if you can’t stop crying, or if you feel unsafe, tell a trusted adult or contact a professional. School counsellors and GP services can also help.
