Exams done? Nice work. Now don’t let your brain keep re-running every question or “what if” — that’s normal, but it’s tiring. This is a tiny, repeatable reset you can do once the last paper’s in to stop rumination and move into real downtime. Short, simple, and easy to remember.

How to do it — 6 minutes

  1. 60 sec — Drop it physically

    • Put any exam papers, notes, and reminders in a single place (a drawer, box or folder). Close it. Physically closing = mental permission to stop.

  2. 3 min — Mind dump (write it out)

    • Set a 3-minute timer. Write down every nagging thought: questions you keep replaying, things you forgot, stuff you’re worried about. Don’t fix anything — just empty the head onto the page.

    • When the timer ends, fold the paper and put it with your notes (or bin it). You’ve offloaded it.

  3. 2 min — Switch ritual

    • Do one small body action that signals “switch”: change into comfy clothes, step outside for 2 minutes, or blast one song and stretch. Say one sentence out loud: “It’s over. I’m off duty.”

Why this works (short)

  • Physical closure + a written dump gives your brain a database — it doesn’t need to keep rehearsing things to remember them.

  • A consistent switch ritual trains your mind: cue = stop ruminating, start relaxing.

Quick practice (right now)

  • Close your notes. Do a 90-second dump if you don’t have 3 minutes. Change your top or step onto the balcony and breathe. Tiny wins count.

Pro tips

  • Keep the mind-dump super messy — spelling doesn’t matter. The point is moving thoughts out of your head.

  • Use the same switch ritual every time for stronger habit building.

  • If a worry needs action (like returning a form), write a single short next step beside it — no planning session, just the next tiny move.

Heads-up
If rumination turns into low mood, panic, or it lasts weeks and blocks sleep or fun, tell a trusted adult or a school counsellor. If you feel unsafe, contact someone you trust or emergency services.

Leaving rumination behind — checklist

  • ✅ Exam papers/notes boxed and closed

  • ✅ 3-minute mind dump done (or 90 sec quick dump)

  • ✅ Dump folded/put away (or binned) — not re-read immediately

  • ✅ Switch ritual done (change clothes / step outside / one song)

  • ✅ One tiny next step written down only if needed (one word or sentence)

🌟 You did the hard bit. Now give your brain permission to rest.
