Why it matters “Pilots” reduce pressure. Try small, learn fast, keep what fits and let go of things that don't.

The best thing about this point in the year is that it's like another little re-set, as you get in January. It's a fresh start at term and you'll have all the new experiences and changes from the summer, which may have you moving in different social circles or interested in different things. Here's a chance to experiment and trial all sorts of clubs, sports, skills and hobbies - especially through extra-curricular provision at your school or college - and see if there's anything you want to make a more permanent addition.

You might also be heading into 'important years' at school and want to change up, refresh or double-down on your study skills and approach. The new academic year is a good time to try these out and make them habits, to carry you through the learning you have ahead of you this year.

Run two pilots

  • Pilot A (activity): join a club for four weeks.

  • Pilot B (study): new note method for one subject.

  • Reflect: 3 questions — What felt good? What was hard? What’s next?

Scripts to steal

  • “I’m testing this for a month.”

  • “I’ll keep the bits that work.”

Try our Weekly Check‑In (Pilots) post, for a checklist that you can copy/paste into your Notes or other app or print off. Completing this and answering the points gives you an easy way to reflect on your pilots, compare what you like or don't, and see where you are in a months time 🤩
